Americans and Canadians speak the same language – right?

Well, not quite and if you want to make the most of your canadian vacation package in the beautiful and rugged north, you probably want to brush up on a few local terms to feel right at home.

Of course, you will see labels and signs all over in Canada in both French and English. But, through my extensive travels I’ve learned that some Canadian words just don’t translate into American English, and vice versa.

So, here is a handy glossary of 12 Terms You Need To Know When You Visit Canada:

1. Loonies and Toonies - These cutesy words are far weightier than they sound. They mean money. Loonies are gold colored $1 coins. Where does this term come from? Well the Loon is the national bird appearing on the front of the $1 coin. The lonesome call of the Loon is a familiar sound in the Canadian wilderness.

2. Toonies -Yes, you guessed it. Toonies are the Loonies $2 cousin.

3. Tuque – The quintessential winter accessory in Canada. We hear that these winter hats are called “ski hats” or “beanies” elsewhere. But Canadians will keep their tuques, thank you very much.

4. Tim Hortons – Canada’s favorite coffee and donut shop. Located throughout the country and often referred to as “Timmies”, it’s a staple in the Canadian diet.

5. Double-double – Often heard at Tim Horton’s, this is the way the “pros” order a coffee with two creams and two sugars

6. Pop The common word for a soft drink, deriving from “soda pop”. Up here, soda is the fizzy water that’s good for getting pop stains out of clothes.

7. Washroom – A synonym for bathroom, restroom or toilet. Don’t waste precious time looking for the bathroom when all signs point to the washroom.

8. Poutine – With all the multi-cultural foods peppering Canada, be sure to try this homegrown favorite on your vacation. This dish of French fries, cheese curds and gravy originated in Quebec has won fans across the country. Trust me, it tastes better than it sounds!

9. Canuck -This is a term of endearment for “Canadian” as in the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, who can be seen on Hockey Night in Canada. Hockey Night in Canada is a must see TV event for hockey lovers…meaning most of Canada. Ask any Canadian on your vacation to hum the theme song – it’s a catchy one!

10. Runners – These are casual sports shoes, otherwise called sneakers or tennis shoes. “Runners” can join “sneakers” on my unofficial list of oddly named items.

11. Click/Kilometer – Kilometer is such a cumbersome word for measuring distance. The slang “click” is a much faster way to share how many kilometers you’ve traveled on your Canadian vacation.

12. Bill – Although you may run into a few friendly Canucks named Bill, chances are you’ll meet bill more often. In Canada, a bill is what you pay at a restaurant.

So, next time you’re in Canada, counting your loonies and toonies while enjoying your double-double after walking 10 clicks in runners and thinking about asking for the bill …you’ll feel right at home.

Hi, there… I’m an 18 year old Filipino student. Early this year, I came to study a new language, not because it’s required in my curriculum (B.S. Information Technology) but because I WANT IT. I study, Spanish but after few weeks, I gave up. aLSo last year, I TRY TO STUDY Mandarin, but it works nothing. Starting last March, i decided to study French, because of its chic factor, and challenge in pronunciation.
Since then, i spend my summer vacation (late March upto early June to a continuous learning. I’m studying, from 2pm from the afternoon, upto 5am the next day… about 15 hours of straight studying over the net for three months. i sleep 5am until noon.

as a result, i came to memorize with the RIGHT pronunciation of several conversational phrases, the alphabet, the right pronunciation of vowels, consonants, vowel combinations, accented vowels and the likes.

Also, due to my love for Canada, i memorize the national anthem of Canada, in both English and French verse.

As i embrace the french language in my life, i also memorize the national anthem of France.

Going deeply, i study and memorize several Disney Songs, such as Ce reve bleu (a whole new world french version)
un nouveau monde (a whole new world canadian french version)
l’amour brille sous les etoiles -(can you feel the love tonight french version)
Ne m’oublie pas (sang by Roch Voisine)
Helene (sang by Roch Voisine)
J’ai pas vingt ans (Alizee)
Somewhere out there (french version)

and very recently, i came to watch "LOVE ME IF YOU DARE" (Jeux d’enfants")– a French movie released by paramount pictures.

i’ve done all of this due to massive effort researches, because for me it’s not that hard to find songs and movies to be played back infinite times.. haha, lol.

i also came with me four books which i bought.
1. Living Language package
French –Learn in 4 simple steps; Complete Course-The Basics
French Dictionary
4 audio cd

2.Geddess and Grosset
French-English and English French Dictionary with vocabulary, phrases and verb tenses, and culture notes included.

3. Say it Right in French (McCain Graw Hill)

4. the internet.

"Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen born in Syria in 1970, came to Canada in 1987. On a stopover in New York as he was returning to Canada from a vacation in Tunisia in September 2002, U.S. officials detained Arar, claiming he has links to al-Qaeda, and deported him to Syria, even though he was carrying a Canadian passport."

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper issues a formal apology to Maher Arar while announcing Arar will receive .5 million in compensation.

The package includes .5 million for pain and suffering, and another million for Arar’s legal fees.

"I sincerely hope that these words and actions will help you and your family begin a new chapter in your lives," says Harper.

The prime minister reveals Canada has sent letters to the U.S. and Syria to protest Arar’s treatment. "

"Dec. 21, 2006

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice promises U.S. security officials will review Arar’s case. "
THANK YOU REPUBLICANS, for making us American look like deranged lunatics with no manners or respect or hospitality for others.

Need Info on Niagara Falls Vacation?

We are planning a trip to Niagara Falls in a few weeks. We plan on traveling by bus to Ontario and staying at the Hampton Inn because we have free nights there. I have been looking at various tour packages that cover the many sites in the area, but I can’t seem to find any that leave from the Canadian side, they all seem to be based in NY and will pick you up at your hotel, as long as it’s on the US side. Since we will not have a car, this concerns me. Can anyone tell me if they have stayed on the Canadian side and how they got around if they did not have a car? Please do not suggest that we stay on the US side, as I said we have free nights at the Hampton so that is where we plan on staying.

Thanks!

please, guys and dolls, this is not a discussion forum: I’m not here for a debate but for an answer. I restate: i’m searching for the most un-christmas-like place for a christmas vacation, and a website to book a vacation package to go there, for cheap. remember: I’m a canadian citizen with no passport.

More vacation time , more paid days off . I checked my companys handbook for our operations in Canada and noticed huge differences between them and us.

Okay, so I booked my vacation package at www.redtag.ca since it was the cheapest all-inclusive. The package itself is approximately 0 and that’s with taxes included.

So far I have this as my expenses:

- Vacation Package = 0
- Room Deposit = 0

What about tips? (Do I pay in loonie coins?)
What about taxi cost? (If the hotel is 45min from the airport?)
What about snorkiling?

If you could list the average cost for the three above questions along with any other costs that would make my day. I’m a student so I don’t have an incredible amount of money to bring – I just don’t want to go there and fall short.

Thanks all :)

I have read that there are terrorist groups killing tourists. Is this true? Is the Philippines such a horrible and dangerous place? I just reserved a package vacation there for 2 weeks, maybe should I cancel my plans to go there and go to Mexico or Cuba instead?
I will be just staying in the city, not venturing out of the city.
And armed guards are great, they make me feel more at ease, more safe.
